Who are Ashoka
Ashoka is an innovative network that encourages and supports social and economical change on a worldwide scale. Ashoka believes that everybody and anybody can be a change maker and aid in solving complex social issues.
Bill Drayton founded Ashoka in 1980 and since then the network has provided professional support services and financial backing for social entrepreneurs that have the passion and ideas to innovate change on a worldwide scale. Ever since founder Bill Drayton first coined the term ‘social entrepreneurship‘, it has become a burgeoning field, attracting many with an interest in a creative approach toward social change.
Ashoka has over 30 years of entrepreneurial experience but aims to move away from simply supporting individual entrepreneurs for financial gain and move towards enabling people from all walks of life to be able to transform their ideas into action plans. The ideas of the people that are sponsored by Ashako are based around changing resources, ecosystems and people for the general good of all and thus promoting a social revolution.
Having selected over 3000 social innovators who are recognized as Ashoka Fellows. Ashoka now seeks to deploy this global network of people and ideas as a massive, collaborative force for positive change. In collaboration with new partners, Ashoka is setting the stage for our Social Innovators to collaboratively tackle the world’s biggest social, environmental, and economic challenges.
The Approach of Ashako
Ashoka is engaging in several initiatives. These include:
- To bring together experts. Ashoka has developed a three year initiative plan that aims to develop rural farming techniques that create landscapes, crops and people that are rich in nutrients. The farmers using these models will be able to decide what to grow and how to grow. The aim is to improve the nutrient value of the soil and the local environment which in turn will become a nutrient bank.The 2013 ‘Nutrients for all’ Competition. There were 21 finalists and the judges chose 8 winners who all received a grant of $10,000 to launch their world changing ideas. For example, one of the winners project was teaching farming skills and nutritional information to the street children of Uganda.
- Developing a Nutrition Economy. The aim of the Nutrients for All campaign is to support change in the environment both socially and economically by improving nourishment and nutrition in people, the environment and the land.
